INSIGHT
August 2026

August was a month about the physical layer. The largest disclosed transactions in the Australian technology market were not software platforms changing hands but the manufacturing, fabrication and delivery capability that sits underneath AI compute. Alongside that, mid-market consolidation continued quietly, with managed services and cybersecurity acquisitions landing in regional Western Australia and Melbourne rather than at the top end of town. Cross-border buyers stayed active, and in two cases converted long-held positions and network affiliations into outright control.

Tabcorp acquires BetMakers Technology Group

Announced 10 August 2026 | A$267 million

Tabcorp Holdings has agreed to acquire ASX-listed BetMakers Technology Group by scheme of arrangement at A$0.24 cash per share, valuing BetMakers at approximately A$267 million, or around A$283 million on a fully diluted basis.

BetMakers is a business-to-business racing and wagering technology platform. Tabcorp is Australia's largest wagering operator and has spent several years rebuilding its technology stack. Buying BetMakers brings that platform capability in-house and adds an established B2B revenue line.

Tabcorp has flagged a target of roughly A$30 million in run-rate net operating cost synergies by the end of year two. Completion is targeted for the third quarter of FY2027, subject to shareholder approval, court sanction and ACCC clearance. It is a clean example of an operator resolving a build-versus-buy question on core infrastructure by acquiring the vendor.

Firmus Technologies acquires Benmax fabrication, design and projects businesses

Announced 21 August 2026 | A$300 million

Firmus Technologies, the Australian AI cloud and infrastructure company behind the HyperCube modular data centre, has signed a binding agreement to acquire the Projects, Design and Fabrication businesses of Benmax Group for A$300 million in cash.

Benmax is a regional NSW mechanical and HVAC systems manufacturer and is already the manufacturer behind the HyperCube modules. The transaction roughly doubles Firmus' workforce from around 170 to 340 people, and Benmax managing director Scott Polsen joins Firmus as Chief Development Officer. Completion is expected between the end of August and the end of September 2026.

The strategic logic is worth noting. The constraint on AI compute build-out in Australia is increasingly fabrication capacity, thermal engineering and construction throughput rather than silicon. Firmus has responded by buying its supply chain outright. Expect other infrastructure players to look at the same question.

Grant Thornton Australia joins Grant Thornton Advisors' multinational platform

Announced 21 August 2026 | Reported at more than A$800 million (Australian Financial Review)

Grant Thornton Australia's partners have approved the firm's move onto the Grant Thornton Advisors multinational platform, which is backed by an investor group led by New Mountain Capital. Completion was expected in late August, subject to customary regulatory approvals.

The transaction adds approximately 1,500 professionals, six offices and around A$282 million of revenue to the platform. Grant Thornton New Zealand, roughly 300 people, joined the same platform separately in December 2025, so the network's ANZ presence now sits under common ownership.

This matters beyond accounting. Private capital is steadily dismantling the partnership model across ANZ professional services, and the resulting platforms compete directly with technology services groups for advisory, data and transformation talent. The buyer set for mid-market consulting and technology services assets is getting deeper as a result.

Affinity MSP acquires EvolveCyber

Announced August 2026 | Undisclosed

Melbourne-based Affinity MSP has acquired EvolveCyber, an Australian managed cybersecurity services provider specialising in penetration testing, risk assessments and compliance support including ISO 27001 readiness.

EvolveCyber will continue to trade as "EvolveCyber, an Affinity MSP company", with existing clients retaining service continuity while gaining access to Affinity's scale and 24/7 support infrastructure.

Managed service providers are increasingly buying security capability rather than building it. Recruiting offensive security and compliance specialists organically is slow and expensive, and acquiring an established practice delivers both the team and the client book. We expect this to remain one of the most active pockets of ANZ mid-market deal flow.

Fuse Technology acquires Infinitum Technologies

Announced 6 August 2026 | Undisclosed

Fuse Technology has acquired Geraldton-based managed IT provider Infinitum Technologies, extending its Western Australian footprint into the Mid West region.

Infinitum will continue to operate under its own brand in the short term, with customers supported by their existing local contacts. Over time those clients gain access to Fuse's broader technical bench and expanded service capability.

The strategic case for regional acquisitions is straightforward. Revenue in centres like Geraldton is modest and hard to dislodge, client retention is strong and the owners are increasingly at a stage where a sale is the natural next step

Novonesis to acquire the remaining stake in MicroBioGen

Announced 10 August 2026 | Undisclosed

Danish biosolutions group Novonesis has agreed to acquire the remaining 77 per cent of Sydney-based MicroBioGen, having held a 23 per cent stake since first investing in 2013.

MicroBioGen is an industrial biotechnology business with deep scientific expertise in engineered yeast strains, principally for bioethanol production, with applications extending into baking, sustainable feed and food. The two companies have collaborated for more than a decade. Completion is subject to customary regulatory approvals, including the ACCC.

The pattern here is one worth watching: a strategic investor holding a long-dated minority position and converting it to control once the technology is commercially proven. For Australian deep-tech founders, early strategic capital frequently defines the eventual buyer.
